Tetracycline to treat huge boil?

Recently, two huge boils have surfaced on my face. One was on my chin – it finally came to a head and drained, but it took forever and was very painful. It’s just now starting to heal, but now I have another one on my cheek! I am having my menstrual cycle, so that may have something to do with it. The boil is making my cheek look bigger than the other one, and it’s painful.
My boyfriend has a bottle of tetracycline pills he got in the army for severe acne. He, too, had boils (on his neck) and the tetracycline made them go away permanantly. Is it okay for me to take this medicine to treat my boil? If not, what is a good treatment to get it to go away quickly, besides going to the doctor?
Besides the occasional small breakout, I usually don’t have acne – my skin’s usually pretty clear.

Hello,

I’m sorry about your boils. It is not really safe to take someone else’s medication, for several reasons. First, it may not be one of the regular tetracyclines, if it was given for acne, – there are several types and different strengths. Second, I don’t suppose there are any reasons for you personally not to take tetracyclines, (I note you are having your period, so couldn’t be pregnant), but that hasn’t been considered by anybody. Third, your boyfriend’s tablets will have an a date-expiry on the label.

Tetracyclines are good for acne because they have a specific long-term action on the particular skin germ which helps cause acne. That’s why they are usually advised in a small dose, but long-term, (I note you say your boyfriend still has some left).

Your boils may be acne- related, you don’t say if you get acne too. But sometimes boils are unrelated to acne and are caused by ordinary staphylococcal infection, (pronounced staff-ill-o–kok’ -el). If you are getting repeated ones, a lot of docs would advise a urine test for sugar, – repeated boils are occasionally a sign of sugar diabetes.

What tends to happen to boils is that they come to a ‘head’ and then burst, and lots of pus and blood comes out. Sometimes they don’t come to a ‘head’ very well, and then antibiotics can be helpful. Encouraging them to burst by putting hot compresses on them was an old treatment before antibiotics came along. Lancing a boil yourself is probably not a good idea, especially on the face.

Hope this is of some help, Belliger (retired UK GP)
