carbuncles and boils treatment
What Is MRSA?
Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) is a type of the Staphylococcus Aureus bacteria which usually is harmless. It can be in or on your body for many years and you would never know about it as it would have no physical symptoms. Approximately a quarter of the population will be carrying the MRSA bacteria at any one time.
It is only when someone has a weak or low immune system due to illness or treatment in hospital that it can become active when it can then cause serious illness, even leading at times to death.
As it only becomes active when people have a weak immune system, people are often in hospital when they pick up MRSA from open wounds or infections. This often leads to people coming out of hospital in a worse condition than they entered it in.
MRSA Symptoms
MRSA mostly manifests itself in the form of skin infections, including:
- Styes on the eyelids
- Boils on the skin, often pus filled hair follicles
- Abscesses – a more serious boil resulting in collections of pus under the skin
- Carbuncles – larger infections causing several openings in the skin
- Cellulitis – infections of the skin and fat tissue under the skin
- Impetigo – blistering of the skin
MRSA can also result in bloodstream or urinary tract infections
What Should You Do If You Have MRSA Symptoms?
If you are suffering from any of these symptoms, and are in hospital or have recently been in hospital, you should seek urgent medical advice by calling your General Practitioner or calling attention to your illness to the hospital staff. Although MRSA is resistant to many antibiotics, it can be treated, and the earlier that treatment can be started the more chance there is of a full recovery.
MRSA Compensation Claim?
If you have picked up MRSA in hospital due to the hospital not being kept sufficiently clean you may be able to make a claim for compensation. You should seek advice from a claims company or solicitor with experience of MRSA claims and in many cases you will be able to make a claim on a no win, no fee basis.
