Is this a good home cure for an ingrowing toenail?
I’ve decided to cure my toenail myself as my chiropodist is away. I need to know if this sounds okay before I try and heal my toe. I’ve had them before and this one is pretty inconvinient, I’m having a pedicure 2mro and my holiday is in a couple of days time so I’ll be wearing sandals.
I’m sterilizing my nail scissors and tweezers in boiling water before I use them. I can’t work out where the nail shard is. My big toe is quite swollen and red along the left side, however is not painful to walk on, although there is a swollen bit of red skin at the top which is extremely painful when prodded with tweezers. I can lift the corner of the nail up so can’t see where the shard is digging in, so it must have broken off.
I’m going to bathe my foot it warm salt water and try and remove the shard with the sterilized tweezers. Then i’m going to rub fucidin cream (anti-bacterial) into it, then I’ll put some cotton wool beneath the corner of the toenail. Good idea and any suggestions?
Try soaking your (affected) foot in hot water. Make sure the water is as HOT as you can stand it, but be careful not to burn your skin. You could add some Epsom salt to help draw out the infection. I always do this for about 20mins, 2x a day.
Sterilizing the tweezers and nail scissors is ALWAYS a good idea! Do this BEFORE and AFTER your attempted bathroom surgery! Normal toenal clippers might not help.
The anti-bacterial cream or even antibiotic ointment is always good. Find some bandaids big enough to cover the toe. This will help keep the cream/ointment on the ingrown toenail.
SKIP the cotton wool! DO NOT put anything under the corner of your toenail! Your toenail is already infected. The cotton or any other material can make this worse!
If you don’t see an improvement after a few days of home treatment, go see your podiatrist or doctor.
