Cause Boils

Many people will suffer the pain and discomfort of boils at sometime during their life. Boils are a tender, inflamed swelling, filled with pus which begin deep within the skin.

Boils are generally caused by a hair follicle which becomes infected – usually by the Staphylococcus Aureus bacteria.

Starting as a tender area of skin with a reddish appearance, the boil will quickly grow larger, firmer and will develop a yellowish white head. This is known as the pustule and is caused by the build up of the white blood cells sent by your immune system, together with bacteria and dead skin tissue. The resultant substance is commonly referred to as the pus.

There are different types of boils, these develop on different parts of the body and have different formations.

  • Furuncles – caused by the bacteria Staphylococcus Aureus infecting a hair follicle. They can appear all over the body, but are most common on the neck, face, armpits, buttocks and thighs.
  • Carbuncles – these are a cluster or group of furuncles. Carbuncles are most commonly found on the back of the neck, the shoulders, hips and thighs. They tend to last longer than furuncles as they are the result of a deeper more serious infection.
  • Hiradentits Supparativa – caused by inflamed sweat glands becoming infected, they occur most commonly under the arms and around the groin area, and can be extremely painful. In the most extreme cases the affected sweat glands may be surgically removed
  • Pilondial Cysts – these boils form between the buttocks and are also known as rectal boils. They are usually recurrent, are very painful (especially when walking or sitting) and can often drain spontaneously. They often form after being seated for prolonged periods, such as a long journey.
  • Cystic Acne – caused by excessive oil production in the skin, which in turn causes bacteria and dirt to become trapped, blocking hair follicles. Cystic Acne is most common on the face, it differs from common acne in that the infection is much deeper in the skin.
